The notification arrives at precisely the wrong moment, usually while you’re trying to photograph something that won’t wait. Storage full. You delete three apps in a hurry, capture the photo, and think no more about it until the same thing happens next week.

That cycle is the problem. Not the storage itself, but the fact that nothing you did addressed why it filled. So here’s how to fix it properly, and then how to stop it recurring.

First, find out what’s actually consuming space

Guessing wastes effort. Both platforms provide a breakdown.

On Android: Settings → Storage, which categorises usage by type and app.

On iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage, which lists applications by size and includes recommendations.

Look carefully, because the results are frequently counterintuitive. People assume photographs are the problem and discover that a messaging app’s cached media occupies more space than their entire camera roll.

Note both the app size and its data size. A messaging app might be 200MB itself while holding 12GB of received images and videos.

The messaging app problem

For a great many people, this is the entire explanation.

Messaging applications automatically download every image, video, voice note, and file sent to you, including everything in group conversations you barely follow. Those files are stored permanently on your device, and they accumulate at a rate that surprises people.

A single active group chat can generate a gigabyte monthly. Several of them, over two years, produce a genuinely enormous cache.

The fix, in two parts:

Disable automatic media download. In most messaging apps, look for storage or data settings and turn off automatic downloading — at least over mobile data and ideally over Wi-Fi too. You can then tap to download only the media you actually want.

Clear existing accumulated media. Better apps include a storage management tool showing which conversations consume the most space and allowing bulk deletion of large files. Start with the largest conversations and delete videos, which dominate the total.

This one intervention frequently recovers more space than everything else combined.

Photographs and videos

The second major category, and the one requiring an actual strategy rather than periodic panic.

Cloud photo services are the standard answer. Both platforms offer them, along with several third-party options. The device keeps smaller versions locally while full-resolution originals live in the cloud, downloaded on demand.

Free tiers are limited, and paid tiers are an ongoing cost, but weigh that against the alternative of periodically deleting memories to make room.

An important warning about optimised storage: when a service stores optimised versions locally and originals in the cloud, deleting a photo from your device also deletes it from the cloud. This is sync behaviour, not backup behaviour, and people lose photographs to this misunderstanding regularly.

If you want to free space by removing photos from your phone while retaining them permanently, you need to copy them somewhere independent first, a computer, an external drive, a separate backup service, and then delete.

Video is the real consumer. A minute of 4K footage at 60 frames per second consumes several gigabytes. If you’re not editing or displaying on a large screen, recording at 1080p produces files a fraction of the size with little visible difference on a phone.

Check your camera settings. Many phones default to the highest available resolution, and most people never change it.

Also check for duplicates. Burst mode, screenshots, and repeated downloads of the same image accumulate substantially. Both platforms now offer duplicate detection, and several third-party tools do this well.

The downloads folder nobody opens

Every PDF you viewed once, every image saved from a browser, every document someone sent, every installer, every file you meant to sort out later.

On Android this is directly accessible through a file manager. On iPhone, check the Files app under On My iPhone → Downloads.

Sort by size and work downward. Most of it is safe to remove, and most people are startled by the total.

Application cache

Applications store temporary data to work faster, thumbnails, preloaded content, offline media. This is legitimate behaviour that becomes a problem when it grows unchecked.

Music and video streaming apps are the largest offenders, since offline downloads and cached streams accumulate substantially. Social media apps cache aggressively too.

On Android, individual app storage settings offer separate options to clear cache and clear data. Clear cache is safe and removes only temporary files. Clear data resets the app entirely, signing you out and removing settings.

On iOS, there’s no equivalent per-app cache clearing. The recommended approach is offloading, which removes the application while preserving its documents and data, allowing reinstallation later without losing anything. iPhone Storage settings can do this automatically for unused apps.

Applications you don’t use

Look through your installed applications honestly. Most people have a dozen they haven’t opened in six months.

Sort by size and by last-used date where available. Anything you haven’t opened in three months and can’t articulate a reason to keep is a candidate.

Preinstalled applications can often be turned off even where they can’t be removed, which stops them updating and consuming additional space.

System storage and the mysterious “Other”

Both platforms show a category of usage that isn’t clearly attributable, labelled System, Other, or similar. It’s frequently several gigabytes and causes considerable confusion.

It contains system files, caches, temporary data, logs, and update packages. Some of it is necessary, and some is recoverable, but it isn’t directly manageable.

Restarting the device clears certain temporary files and frequently reduces this figure noticeably.

On iPhone, a large “Other” category is sometimes reduced by backing up, resetting, and restoring, though that’s a substantial undertaking for uncertain benefit.

Generally, don’t fixate on this category. Address the things you can control first.

Preventing recurrence

Clearing space once accomplishes little if the same accumulation resumes. Change the settings that caused it.

Disable automatic media download in messaging applications. This is the highest-impact change available.

Enable automatic photo backup with a service you understand, so photos leave the device systematically rather than through periodic panic.

Reduce video recording resolution unless you specifically need higher quality.

Enable offloading of unused apps on iPhone, which handles this automatically.

Set a periodic reminder, quarterly is reasonable, to review storage rather than waiting for the notification.

Turn off automatic downloading in streaming apps, or set them to remove downloads after a period.

If your phone has too little storage

Sometimes the honest answer is that 64GB is not enough for modern use, regardless of management.

Where microSD support exists, this is the straightforward solution. Buy a reputable card of appropriate speed class, and move media to it. Note that this feature has become uncommon on newer devices.

Cloud storage subscriptions effectively extend capacity for photos and documents, at an ongoing cost.

External storage via USB-C or Lightning drives works for transferring media off the device periodically.

Regular transfer to a computer remains the cheapest approach, connect monthly, copy photos and videos, delete from the phone.

What to avoid

“Storage cleaner” applications, particularly on Android. They typically clear caches that would clear themselves, occupy space themselves, display advertising, and request extensive permissions. The built-in tools accomplish the same thing without the drawbacks.

Deleting files you don’t recognise from system folders. If you’re not certain what something is, leave it.

Assuming cloud sync is backup. Worth repeating because it costs people their photographs. Sync mirrors deletions. Backup doesn’t.

The sequence

Check what’s using space. Clear messaging app media and turn off automatic downloads. Set up photo backup and remove originals from the device. Empty the downloads folder. Clear caches on the largest applications. Remove unused apps. Adjust the settings that caused the accumulation.

An hour, done properly, will typically recover a substantial share of your storage, and the settings changes mean you won’t be doing it again next month.
