There’s a specific moment when a laptop stops being a tool and starts being an obstacle. Usually it arrives around year four or five. Nothing is broken. It simply resists you, opening slowly, hesitating between windows, running hot enough to be unpleasant on your lap.

The instinct is to replace it. Frequently that’s premature. A laptop from four or five years ago has a processor that remains entirely adequate for ordinary work; what’s degraded is everything around it. And most of that is fixable, often for a small fraction of a replacement’s cost.

1. Install an SSD

If your laptop still uses a mechanical hard drive, stop here and do this first. Nothing else on this list comes close.

The transformation is not subtle. Boot times fall from minutes to seconds. Applications open immediately rather than after a pause. The general hesitation that makes an old machine feel tired largely disappears, because that hesitation was almost entirely the drive.

This works because the processor in a five-year-old laptop was never the problem. It spent most of its time waiting for storage. Remove that wait and the machine responds like the components it always had.

Practically: most laptops of that era use a 2.5-inch SATA drive, replaceable by removing a bottom panel. Some have an unused M.2 slot, allowing an NVMe drive to be added alongside.

You can either clone the existing drive using free imaging software, or perform a clean installation of Windows, which is more effort but also removes years of accumulated software clutter. I’d recommend the clean installation if you have the time, you’re combining two fixes.

Cost is modest. Impact is dramatic. This is the single best money you can spend on an older machine.

2. Add RAM

The second most impactful upgrade, particularly on machines that shipped with 4 or 8GB.

If your laptop struggles when you have several applications open, if switching back to a browser causes tabs to reload, or if Task Manager shows memory consistently above 80 percent, this is your bottleneck.

Before buying: determine what your laptop supports and what’s currently installed. Free system information tools will report the current configuration, maximum supported capacity, and whether slots are available.

The complication: many thin laptops from recent years have memory soldered directly to the motherboard, making upgrades impossible. Others have one soldered module and one slot. Check your specific model before purchasing anything.

Where upgrades are possible, going from 4GB to 8GB, or 8GB to 16GB, transforms multitasking on machines that were previously constrained.

Match the specification of existing memory where you’re adding rather than replacing, same generation, ideally same speed.

3. Replace the thermal paste and clean the cooling system

An overlooked fix with genuinely substantial results on machines four years or older.

Thermal compound between the processor and heatsink dries out over time. In a laptop’s confined, heat-cycled environment, meaningful degradation typically occurs within three to five years. Once dried, heat transfer drops, temperatures climb, and the processor reduces its own speed to protect itself.

The consequence is a machine that runs hot, sounds loud, and performs well below its specification, while every component is technically functioning correctly.

Simultaneously, dust accumulates as a compressed mat on the intake side of the heatsink fins, restricting airflow. This is generally invisible from the outside, which is why people conclude their laptop isn’t dusty when it very much is.

The fix: open the bottom panel, remove the heatsink, clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, apply fresh thermal compound, clean the fan and fins thoroughly, and reassemble.

Difficulty varies considerably by model. Watch a disassembly video for your specific laptop before starting. If it looks daunting, a repair shop will do this inexpensively, and it’s one of the better-value services available.

Machines that were throttling frequently regain substantial performance from this alone.

4. Replace the battery

This doesn’t make the laptop faster in itself, but it changes the ownership experience considerably, and occasionally does affect performance.

Lithium batteries degrade with cycles and with heat. After several hundred cycles, capacity typically falls to 70 or 80 percent of original, and continues declining. A laptop that once managed six hours now manages ninety minutes, which effectively converts a portable machine into a desktop tethered to an outlet.

The performance connection: some laptops reduce processor performance when the battery is severely degraded or when running on a marginal power supply, since the system can’t guarantee sufficient power delivery for peak states. Replacing a badly degraded battery occasionally restores performance unexpectedly.

Check current health before deciding. Windows generates a battery report via powercfg /batteryreport in a command prompt, showing design capacity against current full-charge capacity. Below 70 percent is worth addressing.

Buy carefully. Genuine or reputable third-party batteries only. Cheap unbranded lithium cells are a real safety concern, not a theoretical one. A swollen battery should be replaced immediately and disposed of properly.

5. Clean install the operating system

Software accumulates in ways that are difficult to reverse individually.

Applications installed and imperfectly removed. Startup entries from software you forgot about. Background services from utilities you used once. Driver remnants. Registry entries. Scheduled tasks.

Each is minor. Collectively, after four years, they represent a genuine performance cost, and diagnosing them individually takes far longer than starting fresh.

A clean installation takes roughly an hour and restores the machine to its original software state.

Windows 11’s built-in reset function (Settings → System → Recovery) offers a simpler path, with an option to keep personal files while removing applications and settings. For most people, this is sufficient and considerably easier than a full manual reinstallation.

Before doing this: back up everything, note which applications you actually use, and locate any license keys you’ll need. Download drivers for network adapters in advance, since a fresh installation occasionally lacks the driver required to get online and download drivers.

Combine this with the SSD upgrade if you’re doing both, install fresh onto the new drive rather than cloning the old one.

6. Consider a lighter operating system

If the hardware is genuinely too old for a current Windows version, or if the machine no longer receives updates, this is worth considering rather than discarding the laptop.

Linux distributions designed for older hardware run comfortably on machines Windows has outgrown. Modern desktop environments are approachable, the software available covers ordinary needs, and browsing, documents, media, and email all work well.

The learning curve is smaller than reputation suggests, particularly for someone whose computing consists mainly of a browser.

ChromeOS Flex converts an older laptop into a Chromebook-like device. Simple, fast, secure, and entirely browser-based. Ideal for a machine intended for light use, or for handing to a family member who needs something straightforward.

Both options are free and can be tested from a USB drive before committing anything to the internal storage.

What isn’t worth doing

Replacing the processor. Laptop CPUs are overwhelmingly soldered to the motherboard. Where they aren’t, compatibility is narrow, and the gains rarely justify the effort.

Upgrading the graphics. Not possible on virtually any laptop.

“Optimiser” software. Registry cleaners and performance boosters range from ineffective to harmful.

Spending near replacement cost. If your upgrades approach half the price of a new machine, reconsider. There’s a point where the sensible answer is a replacement.

A sensible sequence

Determine what’s actually limiting it first. Check whether the disk is a mechanical drive, whether memory is consistently saturated, and what temperatures look like under load.

Most laptops need one or two of these, not all six.

The wider point

The most environmentally and financially sensible computer is frequently the one already on your desk. Manufacturing a laptop consumes substantially more resources than operating one for several additional years.

A machine from 2020 with an SSD, adequate memory, fresh thermal paste, and a clean installation is a genuinely capable computer for ordinary work. It won’t handle demanding gaming or heavy video editing, but it will handle documents, browsing, video calls, and media perfectly well.

Before replacing, spend a modest amount and an afternoon. The result frequently surprises people.
