
The first time I used proper noise cancellation was on a long flight, and the effect was genuinely disorienting. Not silence exactly, more like the removal of a pressure I hadn’t noticed was there. When I took them off four hours later, the cabin sounded aggressively loud, and I realised I’d been enduring that noise on every previous flight without ever quite registering it.
That experience sells a lot of earbuds. Whether it justifies the price depends entirely on what you use them for.
How it actually works
Active noise cancellation uses microphones on the outside of the earbud to sample incoming sound, then generates an inverted waveform through the driver. The two waves meet and largely cancel each other out.
The crucial limitation is in the physics: this works well for consistent, low-frequency sound and poorly for sudden, high-frequency sound.
An aeroplane’s engine drone is a steady, predictable, low-frequency wave. The system can analyse it and produce a near-perfect inverse. A person speaking nearby is irregular and high-frequency; by the time the system has analysed a syllable, the syllable is over.
This is why people are sometimes disappointed. They buy noise cancellation expecting to silence a chatty office and discover it excels at silencing air conditioning while leaving the conversation entirely audible.
Passive isolation: the part nobody markets
Before evaluating ANC, understand that a well-fitting earbud already blocks a great deal of sound simply by physically sealing the ear canal.
This passive isolation handles the high frequencies that ANC struggles with, the very frequencies of speech, keyboard clatter, and dishware.
Which leads to an underappreciated conclusion: fit matters more than the ANC specification. An earbud with excellent ANC and a poor seal will underperform an earbud with modest ANC and a perfect seal. The seal also determines bass response, so a bad fit costs you sound quality simultaneously.
If you buy nothing else from this article, buy the idea that trying different ear tip sizes is the highest-value ten minutes you can spend with a new pair of earbuds. Most people use the tips that came pre-installed and never experiment.
Where ANC genuinely earns its price
Air travel. This is the flagship use case, and it’s not close. Engine drone is precisely the sound ANC handles best, and the fatigue reduction over a long flight is substantial.
Public transport. Train and bus noise is similarly low-frequency and consistent. Commuters get the most day-to-day value of any group.
Open-plan offices with HVAC. The air conditioning hum, the server fans, the general ambient rumble, all handled well. The colleague talking two desks away, less so.
Anywhere you’d otherwise raise the volume. This is the health argument, and it deserves more attention than it gets. Without ANC, you compensate for background noise by increasing volume, sometimes to levels that cause gradual hearing damage. With ANC, you can listen at a lower, safer volume. That’s a real benefit that outlasts the earbuds.
Where it doesn’t
Quiet homes. If you mostly listen while sitting in a quiet room, you’re paying for a feature that has nothing to cancel. Spend the money on sound quality instead.
Gyms. ANC and physical activity interact poorly. Movement causes seal changes, which the system handles imperfectly, and some people experience an unpleasant pressure sensation during exercise. Many gyms also have music you may actually want to hear.
Situations requiring awareness. Cycling, running near traffic, walking in unfamiliar areas. Transparency modes exist, but at that point you’re not using the feature you paid for.
Cutting out voices. Worth repeating, because it’s the most common mismatch between expectation and reality.
The occlusion effect and pressure sensation
Some people find ANC physically uncomfortable, and they’re not imagining it.
Sealing the ear canal and then actively manipulating the pressure inside it creates a sensation many describe as similar to a change in altitude. It’s not actual pressure; the eardrum isn’t being pushed, but the brain interprets the absence of expected ambient sound as pressure.
Sensitivity varies enormously between individuals and between products. If you’re susceptible, look for earbuds with adjustable ANC intensity, and always try before committing if that’s possible.
Evaluating quality beyond the feature checkbox
Not all ANC implementations are comparable, and “has ANC” tells you very little.
Adaptive systems adjust cancellation strength based on the environment, and better implementations do this smoothly rather than with audible steps.
Wind noise handling separates good from poor implementations dramatically. Cheap ANC turns wind into a roaring distortion that’s worse than no cancellation at all. Better systems detect wind and reduce or turn off cancellation accordingly.
Transparency mode quality varies from natural-sounding to a tinny, processed approximation of hearing. Since you’ll use this whenever someone speaks to you, it matters more than the marketing suggests.
Sound quality with ANC engaged sometimes differs from ANC off. Cheaper implementations alter the frequency response noticeably when cancellation activates.
The battery trade-off
ANC consumes power continuously. Expect roughly 20 to 30 percent less battery life with it engaged.
This matters for the practical usability of the product. An earbud rated for eight hours might deliver five and a half with ANC on, which is the difference between covering a workday and not.
Check whether stated battery figures are measured with ANC on or off. Manufacturers frequently quote the more favourable number.
What I’d recommend
If you commute or fly regularly: ANC is worth paying for, and worth paying for a good implementation rather than the cheapest option that lists the feature. The daily benefit compounds.
If you work in a noisy environment: worth it, with the caveat that human voices will still come through. If voices are the problem specifically, ANC is the wrong solution.
If you mostly listen at home or while exercising: spend the money on sound quality, fit, and battery life instead. ANC will be a feature you toggle on once and forget.
If you’re unsure: consider that well-fitting earbuds with strong passive isolation deliver a large fraction of the benefit at a lower price. Try that first.
The fit point, one more time
I want to close on this because it’s the thing most people get wrong.
Buy earbuds that come with multiple ear tip sizes. Try all of them, including on each ear separately; ear canals are frequently asymmetric. Foam tips, sold separately for a few dollars, often outperform the silicone tips included in the box by expanding to fill the canal more completely.
The right tips will improve your isolation, your bass response, your comfort, and your ANC performance simultaneously. It’s the cheapest upgrade in audio, and almost nobody does it.
